Footwear Care – Longevity and Beauty of Your Shoes
A short and clear Di Shop guide on how to care for your footwear so it lasts longer and always looks great.
Right Size & Fit
- Choose shoes according to your foot’s length, width, and shape—so your foot isn’t squeezed but also doesn’t slip.
- On our site you’ll find clear notes if a model runs small or large. Check this before ordering.
Gentle Shoe-Putting Technique
- Always use a shoehorn—it protects the heel counter and seams from damage.
Water-Repellent Treatment & Moisture Control
- Use spray-on protectors (e.g., NANO POWER SPRAY). They form a thin barrier that repels water and dirt.
- Apply 2–3 coats, letting each layer fully dry before wearing outdoors.
- In damp weather, reapply several times a week to maintain protection.
Natural Leather Care
- Clean only with a damp cloth or a dedicated leather balm—do not wash with water.
- Avoid leaving leather shoes outdoors or wearing them when wet.
- To reduce perspiration, choose cotton or natural-leather insoles.
- Color revive: apply a leather cream matched to your shoes—this nourishes the leather and restores its hue.
Suede & Nubuck Care
- Use the same impregnation and cleaning products as for smooth leather.
- Never wear unprotected suede in wet conditions.
- Texture enhancement: gently brush with a soft suede brush to lift the nap and reveal the natural grain.
Patent-Leather Features
- No impregnation needed—patent leather already has its own sealed finish.
- Before first wear, simply wipe the surface with a clean, dry or slightly damp cloth.
- For extra shine or care, use a patent-leather conditioner or mild cleaner.
- Avoid harsh or oily sprays—they can dull or damage the glossy finish.
- Don’t wear patent shoes below –5 °C; cold can cause cracking.
Rubber & Textile Footwear
- Do not machine-wash or hand-wash—high heat deforms rubber.
- Don’t dry by radiators, stoves, or direct sunlight—shoes may lose their shape.
- Wear textile shoes only in dry weather. If they get wet, air-dry at room temperature away from heat sources.
Sole Protection & Reinforcement
- When you buy shoes with leather soles, consider having a cobbler add a protective sole guard.
- A quality sole guard can extend wear life by 3–4× and prevent scuffs.
External Protection
- Keep shoes away from sharp objects and harsh chemicals (acids, solvents) to avoid stains and scratches.
Additional Tips
- Shape retention: use wooden shoe trees—they preserve the silhouette and absorb moisture.
- Rotation: switch pairs daily so each has time to dry and air out.
- Insole care: replace or use odor-absorbing insoles regularly to guard against bacteria and unwanted smells.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are leather shoes waterproof?
Leather itself isn’t fully waterproof and may eventually let in moisture. For protection against rain or melting snow, look for labels "Waterproof" (complete barrier) or "Water Resistant" (protection from light moisture).
Why does the leather lining dye my socks?
Natural leather dyes can release pigment when exposed to heat and moisture. Solutions: use a thin extra insole, apply anti-dye treatments, or wear dark socks.
